Celebrating Earl W. Oglebay

Earl William Oglebay (1849-1926)
Born in Bridgeport, Ohio, and raised in Wheeling, Virginia (now West Virginia), Earl Oglebay became a leading industrialist in banking and iron ore, founding Oglebay, Norton & Company. In 1900, he purchased Waddington Farm, transforming it into a model estate for agricultural research. Over 25 years, he advanced soil culture, crop rotation, and livestock breeding while supporting the early 4-H movement.
Oglebay’s legacy continued through his family, with his nephew establishing Oglebay Institute. WVU honored him by naming its agriculture building after him. Upon his death, he willed his estate to Wheeling for public recreation, creating Oglebay Park in 1928.

We’re commissioning a sculpture to honor the man who created Oglebay Park.
The Sculpture costs $150,000 and $50,000 has already been pledged.
Gifts of $1,000 or more will be acknowledged on a plaque.
